Officer Micah Brown

MARTA Police Department

Cause of Death: Automobile Accident
End of Watch: Saturday, October 25, 2003
Date of Incident: October 8, 2003
Age: 29
Tour of Duty: 2 yr
Weapon Used: Automobile
Suspect Info: Apprehended

Micah Brown, 29, was the first MARTA officer killed on duty in the transit agency's 26-year history.  Brown died of a traumatic brain injury.

Brown was injured Oct. 8 while responding to a theft-in-progress call at the Lakewood rail station. Another driver turned right on red in front of his police cruiser, officials said. The collision, at Lee Street and Donnelly Avenue, sent Brown's car careening into a concrete pillar.

The other driver, Ricky Potts, 34, of southwest Atlanta fled from the accident scene, but witnesses gave police enough information to identify Potts, who was arrested the same day. Potts was charged with hit-and-run, serious injury by vehicle, failure to yield and having no insurance.

Brown had been on the MARTA police force for two years.

Officer Aaron J. Blount

Fulton County Police Department

Cause of Death: Gunfire
Date of Incident: Tuesday, April 22, 2003
Age: 26
Tour of Duty: 2.5 yr
Weapon Used: Gun; Unknown type
Suspect Info: Apprehended

Officer Blount was shot and killed at approximately 2200 hours while making a traffic stop at the intersection of Roosevelt Highway and Ben Hill Road in the Red Oak section of the county. Officer Blount had been assigned to desk work at the police station for most of his shift and had left the station only 18 minutes earlier to go out on patrol. He noticed a car driving erratically and stopped it. Before he had a chance to radio in the stop the driver of the vehicle exited the car and opened fire on Officer Blount, who was still in his patrol car, striking him twice in the head and once in the shoulder.

Another officer who was driving past the corner found his patrol car with the emergency lights flashing and Officer Blount slumped across the steering wheel. The patrol car, which was still in drive, rolled across the highway and came to rest against a set of railroad tracks.

The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended in Miami, Florida, five days after the murder by U.S. Marshals and Miami-Dade police officers.

Officer Blount had been with the agency for just under three years and is survived by his fiance and 13-month-old son.
